Episode 34 - I Declare A Thumb War!

Wally returns and he is better than ever!

We guess.

Listen as Jay and Wally talk about why they may some day have to stop doing the show, a metric mess ton of comic book movie news, and why Megan Fox disgusts us.

She gives me the willies just thinking about her!

Catch all that and more on the podcast three out of four dentists recommend!*

33 - Re-Pete Offender

This week on the BNC, returning guest Pete Jurich has some mighty shoes to fill when Wally takes the week off and leaves Jay at the helm.  Not to worry though, the guys keep the rig on track with discussions ranging from Walking Dead, Lots of Star Wars news, the PS4 announcement, Nerdy News of the Week and of course a lengthy discussion about The Dark Knight Returns Parts 1 & 2 (since Wally has yet to see them).
So kick back, grab yourself a snack and prepare to be amazed....or at least mildly amused.  Excelsior!

E3 Special Report: Sony, Livin' La Vita Loca

To be fair, I have to give a little bit of full disclosure with this one.  I do not own, nor have I ever had a lengthy play session with the PlayStation 3.

There are a few reasons for this, but the most prominent is that I am, in fact, a broke nerd.  I can really only afford to buy games for and accessorize one console at a time and this time around it is the Xbox.

So with this said, I felt that the Sony conference was pretty forgettable, but only because I pretty much don’t care about the PS3 and the games associated with it.

That statement is going to get me a lot of flack with the gaming community, but I need to explain it further.

During the announcements, Sony started announcing big exclusive after big exclusive that everyone was hyped for in the crowd.  Me?  I’ve never really played the games that these sequels were for.

As an old school Sony fan, I was pleased to hear some of the more classic titles getting new installments, like Twisted Metal, but I was lost on some of the newer ones.

Sony’s biggest two announcements were a 24’ starter 3DTV that I didn’t get a price for that is PlayStation branded.  This seems a little odd as I don’t think I’d want to experience 3D on a smaller screen.  Sony understood that the reason why 3D isn’t so widely accepted at home yet is due to the expense, but what they aren’t counting on is that I don’t want a crappy experience either.  I’m not saying that 3D on a smaller screen can’t work, anyone with a 3DS would argue that fact, but I’m just saying that if I decide that I was going to be jumping into the 3D TV bandwagon, I would do it full-hog.

Second is the portable gaming system, the Vita.  With a touch screen, a touch pad, dual analog sticks, and a powerful gaming system inside.

Now I’ve already was a huge fan of the PSP when it first came out and I took it everywhere.  I remember watching “Kill Bill” while waiting in line to see “Star Wars”, playing “Hot Shots Golf” on the way to Disney World, and hacking the firmware to do all the neat things that Sony didn’t want me to do.  Before the system could really take off, my brother broke it and as you know, I couldn’t afford to replace it.

With this in mind, I am quite excited about the Vita, silly name aside.  Of course I’ll never be able to afford it at $250 for the WiFi version and $299 for the 3G with AT&T service inside.

So how was the Sony Conference?

To me, it seemed a little safe and the innovations behind the Move controller do not seem as incredible as what is happening with Kinect right now, but overall, it was about games and Microsoft seems to have lost that fact.

Tomorrow, I will attempt to give my lengthy first impressions of Nintendo’s newest console: Wii U.

Sony Announces Something, ANYTHING (Updated Again!)

For almost a week now, the Playstation Network (PSN) has not been working.  The online infrastructure was apparently hacked by someone and Sony decided that the best course of action was to shut it down entirely.

I'm not effected by this whole thing since I don't have a Playstation 3 for a variety of reasons, the first and foremost being that they were stupidly expensive when they first came out and the people who run Sony seem like they have a stick in thier collective asses.  Microsoft and Nintendo have a sense of wonder and fun about them, but Sony is like that filmmaker who feels that thier mediocre body of work is way more important than trying to do anything fun with it.

It got better when they started doing the commercials with Kevin Butler, but  it seemed like any time any announcements are made, it has no life, no excitement.  It's as if they are more in love with the products that they produce and the fans should just accept what they do.

A prime example of how poorly the company regards thier customers has been the launch of the Playstation Move.  It was quietly released and generated very little excitement in my opinion as I had no idea that it was even being released until the day I saw it on store shelves.

In contrast, when the Kinect was released, Microsoft SHUT DOWN TIME SQUARE to throw a dance party.

Sony Playstation Network Card - $50With all of that said, it’s really of no surprise to me as to how poorly Sony is treating this PSN outage with nearly zero transparency as to what is going on with their network.  Now there are millions of people who haven’t been able to use this service for five days and counting, but has Sony given us information about when the service will be back up?  Will people get refunds for the outage that pay for the PSN Plus service or  DC Online?  How about  personal information?  Should we report the cards we use as stolen?

The answer, of course, is that they  haven’t said.

Normally, I wouldn’t even worry about this, but what Sony DID decide to announce is almost insulting in my opinion.

Sony has announced plans to release a Playstation branded tablet.

Huh?

Does anyone really WANT another hat thrown in the tablet arena?  Apple seems to have a pretty good grasp of this market, and I’m sure HP, Motorola, RIM, and all of the others out there creating these devices will do a fine job as well, but why announce the release of a product that no one expected, wanted, and named for a product line that currently has a terrible ongoing issue?

As the axiom goes, time will tell, but I don’t see this tablet business going anywhere and I feel that this was a limp attempt to distract from the horrible ongoing troubles the PSN is having.

UPDATED
On Twitter Jason Evangelho of the incredible site www.videogamewriters.com pointed out that Xperia Play is a separate division from the division who are developing the tablet.  I'm not changing the content of the article since I still think this was poor timing, but it definitely should be noted.

UPDATED AGAIN!

Sony has finally told everyone what is going on and it's not good.

The shorthand is that on April 20, 2011, Skynet hackers infiltrated the PSN and made off with a lot of your personal information including your name, address, phone numbers, passwords, and any other information you may have given to Sony.  Sony says that they don't know if credit card information was stolen yet, but what hacker can get all of your information and tell himself to have the restraint not upload your account info?

What that means to PSN users is that if they had that info in there, you may want to monitor your accounts and change all of your passwords.
